Pearson to Downtown Toronto: UP Express vs. TTC

Getting from Pearson to downtown Toronto: how UP Express, the TTC and taxis compare on time, cost and convenience, with tips on which to choose.

Pearson to Downtown Toronto: UP Express vs. TTC Downtown

Landing at Pearson and heading downtown? The two transit options most visitors weigh are the UP Express train to Union Station and the TTC. Here's how they compare, using details from UP Express and a Toronto tourism guide updated October 11, 2026.

UP Express: Fast and Predictable

UP Express runs from Pearson Terminal 1 (arrivals level) to Union Station in about 28 minutes, with stops at Weston and Bloor along the way. Trains run every 15 minutes. According to the guide, the first train leaves at 4:55 a.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. on weekends and holidays, and the last train is at 1 a.m. Fares listed are $12.35 one-way for adults, or $9.25 with PRESTO; children under 12 ride free, and youth, post-secondary students and seniors get a PRESTO discount. Return trips aren't discounted, so you buy two one-way tickets. If you land at Terminal 3, the free LINK train gets you to Terminal 1 in about five minutes.

The TTC: Cheaper, Slower

The same guide lists the TTC fare at $3.30 and notes that a bus 900 plus subway trip is slower than UP Express. It's the budget option, and it makes sense if you're staying near a subway line and aren't carrying much luggage. Fares change, so confirm current pricing with the TTC.

Taxi, Rideshare and Limo

Cost and time depend on traffic and destination, and a limo costs far more than UP Express, according to the guide. For door-to-door convenience with bags or a group, they can still make sense.

Making the Connection Downtown

Union Station is the downtown terminus and connects to TTC Line 1, so you can walk or transfer straight into the core. UP Express's own Toronto fall guide points visitors to nearby highlights including the Distillery District, St. Lawrence Market and Queen Street West. The Bloor stop is next to Dundas West subway station on Line 2, handy if you're staying west.

How to Choose

Pick UP Express if you value speed, a fixed 28-minute journey and an early or late arrival that fits its 4:55 a.m. to 1 a.m. window. Pick the TTC if cost matters more than time. Take a taxi or rideshare when you have lots of luggage or travel in a group. Whichever you choose, check current fares and schedules before you go.
