Where to Eat Near Union Station Before a Game or Show Downtown

Eating downtown before a Leafs game, a Jays game or a concert is a logistics problem disguised as a dining decision. You have a fixed puck drop or curtain time, a crowd of several thousand people trying to solve the same problem, and a walk to factor in. The good news is that Union Station sits within a few minutes of both Scotiabank Arena and the Rogers Centre, and the station itself now contains real restaurants rather than only grab-and-go counters. Here is how the options compare when the clock matters.

Inside the station: the zero-walk option

Union Station's York Street Promenade hosts several sit-down restaurants specifically positioned for before and after big events. WVRST serves Alpine fare and artisan sausages with a solid craft beer and cider list — a carnivore favourite and the most efficient of the group if you want a proper meal without much ceremony. Amano Italian Kitchen leans Roman, with signature cocktails and Aperitivo Hour food and drink specials, which makes it the better pick if you want a drink built into the plan. Union Chicken handles Southern classics including its O.G. Fried Chicken Sandwich and keeps a family-friendly room, which is the relevant detail if kids are part of the group.

Blue Bovine Steak + Sushi House is the outlier — it merges a traditional steakhouse with a sushi house, and it is the one in-station option that reads as a real occasion rather than a pre-event stop.

The shared advantage across all four is obvious: you are already at the transit hub, the walk to the venue is short, and if service runs slow you have not stranded yourself blocks away. The shared disadvantage is equally obvious — everyone else has had the same idea, so a reservation or an early seating matters more here than anywhere else on this list.

A short walk away: more room, slightly more risk

Taverna Mercatto is conveniently placed near Scotiabank Arena, Union Station, the GO train and the Rogers Centre, and works equally well for a birthday, a date night or a pre-game dinner. That flexibility is the point — it does not feel like an event-adjacent restaurant, which is exactly why it is useful when half your group cares about the game and half does not.

Earls Financial District sits within walking distance of both the Rogers Centre and Scotiabank Arena and openly positions itself for pre-game fuel and post-event celebrations. It is the safest large-group choice on this list: the menu is broad enough that nobody has to compromise, and the room is built to absorb a crowd.

Pizzeria Libretto – University is a short walk from Union and does authentic Neapolitan-style pizza — wood-fired, fresh ingredients, traditional technique, simple things done well. Neapolitan pizza also happens to be one of the fastest real meals you can order, which is an underrated advantage when you are eating against a clock.

The trade-off that actually matters

Every choice here is a bet on time. Staying inside Union Station buys you buffer: if the kitchen is slow, you absorb it. Walking a few blocks buys you space and usually a calmer room, but you spend the buffer on the walk and you are further from the gate if plans slip.

A reasonable rule: if you have less than 90 minutes before the event starts, stay in the station. If you have two hours or more, walk — the experience is better and the rooms are less frantic.

How to choose

Match the restaurant to the constraint, not the craving. Tight on time and travelling by GO or subway? WVRST or Union Chicken inside the station, and order something that arrives fast. Want a drink and an hour to sit? Amano's Aperitivo Hour is the reason to arrive early rather than a consolation for it. Feeding a big mixed group with a wide range of tastes? Earls Financial District absorbs that better than anything else nearby. Turning the evening into a proper occasion? Blue Bovine in the station or Taverna Mercatto a short walk out.

Whichever you pick, book ahead and aim to be seated at least 75 minutes before the event. Downtown restaurants near the Rogers Centre and Scotiabank Arena all fill on the same schedule, and the walk-in that works on a random Tuesday will not work on a game night.
